Description

my entry for the street photography contest.

this photo was made in gravina, southern italy, on september 29th, during the procession dedicated to saint michael, who's my town's patron saint. i wanted to capture on film some typical moments of the celebration, but what motivated me to take this photo was the anomaly of the situation.
the members of the religious confraternities during the processions try to look serious and full of dignity, but this man for a few seconds forgot to honour saint michael, because some kids on the second floor annoyed him with the laser pointers of their toy guns. he looked at them with that angry expression and muttered a couple of curses and bad words, but then he remembered he was supposed to have a solemn look, so he moved on. i'm glad i "nailed" that unique anomalous moment.

camera: nikon fm.
lens: 50mm 1:1.8 - because it's the fastest lens i've got and it was night.
aperture: 1.8 - because i wanted to isolate him from the background and from that man with the glasses, and of course there wasn't much light.
shutter speed: 1/30 - short enough to freeze the movement, long enough to give a balanced exposure.
film: kodak tri-x - not pushed, because i needed it both for day and night shots, 400 iso was good for both.
photoshop: border, a little bit of levels adjustment to make it look exactly like the original, because of the bad scan.

tell me if i forgot some of the required data, please.
------------------------

so, i decided to enter the street contest, mainly because i'm slowly getting interested in that kind of photography. i know i have always been taking other kinds of photos, but the ones who watch me know why. i need a change now, i need to get closer to people, street photography seems to be a good way to start and i definitely want to get involved in this kind of thing.
at first i was disappointed because of that fat man on the foreground, but i changed my mind, it helps the viewer understand that it's the photo of a procession. then, i can't imagine a substantially better composition, even though this one isn't that good. you must also consider that i had a few seconds to take it.
i know that this one will hardly win, there are some great street photographers on this site, but the idea of the contest was a great chance to start taking my camera on the streets.

It's not often that you see a photograph that is not only both well-taken and beautiful as a whole, with a definite artistic touch, but immensely funny as well.

Also, it's good to see that you are doing fine. :)
